I hear the “why” questions quite often…
“Why should I worry about maintaining my site? It isn’t important enough for anyone to want to hack.”
Hackers don’t usually target specific, important sites. Ok, some do, but those are mainly wanting to make some sort of statement.
However, there are many many MANY hackers who hack any site they can get into because they can turn any site into a money-grabbing, malware-laden bot that lets them unleash all sorts of maliciousness. Essentially, no matter how non-important you think your site may be, to a hacker, it’s a tool to be used to hurt others, while making the hacker rich.
At this point, I usually hear this…
“Why don’t you just make it safe and secure to begin with, and then I won’t have to worry about hackers in the future?”
Technology, as we know, evolves at a very rapid pace. Code that is safe and secure today, may prove to have a vulnerability in the future. Hackers look for those vulnerabilities and pounce on them when they find them. Luckily, there are many ethical people who are also looking for vulnerabilities so that they can then alert the developers of the code, and help to fix the problems before hackers discover them.
This is just how things work in our interconnected world.
The best thing we can do is to put out the best, most secure site we can, and then maintain the site by making sure plugins, themes, and core code are updated on a timely basis. This is our best chance to thwart anyone hoping to break into our sites with their nefarious plans of destroying our livelihoods, reputation, and more.
Finally, I hear this…
“Why can’t I just do this on my own?”
The answer to that is you certainly can! If you ever want to discuss training options, so that you can learn how to maintain your site, as well as how to solve problems when they occur, just let me know. I’ll be happy to guide you in that direction.
On the other hand, if you don’t have time to learn the ins and outs of maintaining your site, or the time to properly implement that maintenance day after day after day, you can count on me to handle it for you.
